The six official regions of Leonida
GTA 6 is set in the state of Leonida, Rockstar’s fictional Florida, and the official site names six regions you will be able to visit. Everything below is Rockstar’s own copy or on-record statements, lightly compressed.
Vice City. “We’re a long way from the ’80s, but Vice City is still the sun and fun capital of America.” The official description runs from the pastel art deco hotels and bright white sands of Ocean Beach, through the panaderias of Little Cuba and the bootleg brands of the Tisha-Wocka flea market, out to the VC Port, billed as the cruise ship capital of the world. This is the neon core of the map.
Leonida Keys. A tropical archipelago where, per the official write-up, life “isn’t flashy but it’s easy,” sitting right on the doorstep of “some of the most beautiful and dangerous waters in all of America.” It is also home turf for the story: Jason’s official bio says that after a stint in the Army he “found himself in the Keys doing what he knows best, working for local drug runners.”
Grassrivers. Leonida’s Everglades, announced as “the untamable jewel of Leonida’s crown.” The official text warns that the gators “may be the most famous attraction, but there are far deadlier predators and weirder discoveries among the mangroves.” The Extended Look already put you on a fan boat cutting through exactly this kind of wetland.
Port Gellhorn. The flip side of the postcard. Official copy calls it “Leonida’s forgotten coast,” where cheap motels, shut-down attractions and empty strip malls coexist with “a new economy in this once-popular vacation spot.” Read that second part however you like. I read it as organized crime with a beach view.
Ambrosia. Inland industry country, where “American industry and old school values still reign supreme.” The Allied Crystal sugar refinery provides the jobs, and a biker gang provides, in Rockstar’s phrasing, “almost everything else.”
Mount Kalaga. A national landmark up against the state’s northern border, offering “prime hunting, fishing, and off-road trails,” with hillbilly mystics and paranoid radicals in the surrounding backwoods. The map runs from swamps to mountains, and Rockstar wants you to know it.
How big is the GTA 6 map? The official numbers
Here is where the record gets straightened out, because the internet has spent months arguing about this with invented numbers. Rob Nelson, who runs Rockstar North, described it to IGN plainly: “It’s a big map, a very big map,” part of what he called the largest, deepest, most densely populated and complex world the studio has ever built. His colleague Aaron Garbut put a multiplier on it: the map is twice as big as GTA 5’s, with the team obsessing over “the rooftops, the alleys, the internals” until they hit “a critical mass with the numbers of our interiors.”
IGN’s size stack-up adds the comparisons fans quote most: roughly three times Red Dead Redemption 2’s playable area, Vice City alone running twice the size of Los Santos, and Vice City with its suburbs measuring eleven times Los Santos and its surrounding areas. What does not exist, anywhere, is an official figure in square kilometers or square miles. The often-cited GTA 5 baseline of roughly 75.8 square kilometers is a community measurement, not a Rockstar number, so treat every precise figure you see for GTA 6 as fan math.
The GTA 6 locations you can already point at
Beyond the six regions, the official materials name plenty of specific places. Trailer 1 showed Vice Beach with a plane towing a NINE1NINE banner, Port Vice City branded PVC on-screen as the PortMiami analogue, the 500 Brickell twin towers, the Kaseya Center arena, and the Ocean Drive art deco strip with South Beach’s Colony Hotel rebuilt as the Boardwalk Hotel. Signage in the footage named three counties, Vice Dale, Leonard and Kelly, along with towns including Catalan Boulevard, Stockyard Downtown, Hamlet and Waning Sands.
The Extended Look went further, naming in-world Vice City spots like the Effluvia rooftop bar, the Jack of Hearts club, Megamundo HQ and the Nine 1 Nine nightclub, and giving the clearest look yet at Starfish Island, which players last visited in 2002. The launch trailer from October 15 opens in the Keys at Brian’s Marina, where Jason works on boats for Brian Heder, officially “a classic drug runner from the golden age of smuggling in the Keys.”
The systems that make Leonida feel lived in
A map is only as good as what happens on it, and Rockstar has confirmed a few of the moving parts. Leonida hosts more than 170 animal species, which Rockstar VP Michael Kane framed as a faithful cross-section of Florida’s ecosystems, from urban and rural environs to inland and ocean aquatic life and the wetland habitats. Weather is localized, persistent and dynamic, with tropical storms and hurricanes confirmed to roll through the state. Getting around includes a fast-travel system built on in-world rideshare cars, sometimes with NPC passengers along for the ride. And the water is fully part of the world: fan boats cross the swamps and kayaks handle open water, per Rockstar’s own presentation.
What Rockstar has NOT confirmed
The honest counterweight to every map breakdown on your feed:
- An absolute size. No official number in square kilometers or miles exists. Only the relative statements above.
- The leaked map images. The “Leonida map” screenshots circulating since August are an unverified leak, not Rockstar material, and several outlets declined to share them for legal reasons.
- The “2.7x GTA 5” estimate. A fan projection, superseded by Garbut’s official “twice as big” statement.
- Vice Point. IGN hedged that a beach in the Extended Look “could potentially be Vice Point.” Ocean Beach and Washington Beach are official names; Vice Point is not.
- Mariana County, Gellhorn International Raceway, Key Lento. Names that circulate in fan wikis and leak-based mapping sites. None appear in any official material.
- Full access from the start. Rockstar has not said whether any regions stay gated during the story. Nobody knows, including the people claiming they do.
How to grade any GTA 6 map claim
Three questions settle almost every argument. Does it appear in official material, meaning the site, the four trailers, the Newswire, or a Take-Two release? Is it a named Rockstar person on the record? Is it a fan measurement clearly labeled as one? If a claim fails all three, it is rumor, and the final month before launch will produce more of those than the whole past year combined.
